Description: This title page reads "Journal of the Convention, of the Territory of the United States North-west of the Ohio, Begun and Held at Chillicothe, on Monday the First Day of November, A. D. One Thousand Eight Hundred and Two, and of the Independence of the United States the Twenty-Seventh." In November 1802, thirty-five delegates of the Ohio Constitutional Convention convened to draft an Ohio state constitution. In order for Ohio to become a state, representatives of the territory had to submit a constitution to the United States Congress for approval. This was the final requirement under the Northwest Ordinance that Ohio had to meet before becoming a state. Twenty six of the delegates favored the platform of the Democratic-Republican Party. Among these men was Edward Tiffin, the president of the convention. Democratic-Republicans favored a small government with limited powers, in which the legislative branch should hold the few powers that the government actually possessed. Seven delegates to the convention were Federalists. Federalists believed in a much stronger government. The remaining two delegates were independents. Since the Democratic-Republicans controlled the convention, Ohio's first state constitution established a relatively weak government with the legislative branch holding most of the power. The convention approved the Constitution on November 29, 1802, and adjourned, and Ohio's Constitution of 1803 remained in effect until the Ohio Constitutional Convention of 1851 adopted a new one. Description: Gibraltar Island, known as "Gem of Lake Erie", is a 6.5 acre Ohio island located on Lake Erie. It is part of Put-in-Bay Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, but was owned by the state of Connecticut until 1807. The island was and observation site for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's naval forces during the Battle of Lake Erie in September 1813. In 1864 Jay Cooke, a Sandusky, Ohio native, bought the island and built a Victorian-Gothic mansion (now known as Cooke Castle). Julius Stone, a Trustee of The Ohio State University, purchased the island from Cooke's family and presented it to the Ohio State University in 1925. It became a home to Stone Laboratory - the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States. The Jay Cooke Castle, built in 1865, is a National Historic Landmark. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Two students sitting on the north bank of Mirror Lake on the Ohio State University campus. Mirror Lake was purchased by OSU along with a piece of land from William Neil. Originally it was spring-fed but it dried up in 1891 and the water was subsequently provided by municipal water supply. Since 1990 there has been a tradition of students jumping into the lake around midnight on the Thursday night prior to the annual football game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines. It is said that the the lake is haunted by multiple ghosts of students who lost their lives in unfortunate accidents in or near the lake. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Inside view of Ohio Stadium (also known as the "Horseshoe" or the "Shoe" because of its unique horseshoe shape), the football stadium at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, ca. 1935-1943. Architect Howard Dwight Smith designed the plans for Ohio Stadium, earning him an award from the American Institute of Architects. Ohio Stadium was built in 1922 and is home to the Ohio State Buckeyes football team. The original stadium held 66,000 spectators. With renovations throughout the years, the stadium now has a seating capacity of 102,329. While in this image the south end of the stadium is open, in 2001 permanent stands were added to the south end closing the stadium off. Description: William Oxley Thompson was the fifth president of The Ohio State University, serving from 1899 to 1925. Prior to working for The Ohio State University he served as the president of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. During his presidency at The Ohio State University, the College of Education was added, enrollment grew by four thousand, and the original Ohio Stadium was built on the banks of the Olentangy River. Description: University Hall as seen from the west bank of the Olentangy River looking northwest. The Ohio State University was established in 1870 as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, a land-grant university. University Hall opened in September 1873 and it was the first building on the campus. In addition to being the first classroom building, it also housed the library, administrative offices, apartments for faculty, dormitory rooms for male students as well as a chapel. In 1968, due to lack of structural integrity, the building was deemed unsafe and everything was moved out of it. It was torn down in 1971. The new University Hall that was completed in 1976 stands in almost the same spot and was designed to look exactly like the original building on the outside. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of a drum major with The Ohio State University Marching Band. The Ohio State Marching Band was established in 1878, at the time a 12-piece fife and drum corps. Today it is one of the largest all-brass and percussion bands in the country. A number of marching band innovations were first tried by the Ohio State Marching Band--for example, script writing and measured step marching.
